Counseling/Psychotherapy in Los Angeles

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is aimed at helping a person to identify and overcome psychological, behavioral, and emotional problems that are causing disruption in one’s life. Psychotherapy is done by, and this is important, a licensed professional, usually a psychologist (Ph.D.), social worker (LCSW), or a professional counselor (MFT). Psychotherapists utilize a variety of techniques and approaches, each one with advantages and disadvantages. Depending on their approach, the focus may be on identifying self-defeating thinking or irrational beliefs and behaviors; examining underlying psychological or psychodynamic issues, and in some cases receiving a diagnosis and treatment for a specific mental disorder. The time it takes to complete the therapy process depends on the nature and severity of the problem, the client’s willingness to do the necessary work, and the effectiveness of the psychotherapist.

How Can I Determine the Effectiveness of a Psychotherapist?

Research has consistently shown that the most important determinant of successful psychotherapy is the relationship between the client and the therapist. This means that the client has to feel safe and comfortable. It also means that the client should feel understood and believe that the therapist can help them with their problem. While a psychotherapist’s credentials and experience may be general predictors of their competency, there is no guarantee that every client will relate to every therapist. As a general rule it would be best to shop around before committing to a specific therapist. This can be done easily by telephoning several therapists and interviewing them. Only you can determine if there is a chemistry with that person or not. Most reputable psychotherapists will gladly talk with you by phone and many will offer a free face-face consultation. Also, not all psychotherapists are effective or experienced in treating every type of problem, so it is important to ask them about this in your interview.

Will Psychotherapy Help?

Most certainly! Whether it is learning to handle stressful life and relationship issues or dealing with more serious problems like depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, psychotherapy is a necessary ingredient in helping one to overcome and to heal.
